Dr. Laura R. Levens is the Assistant Professor of Christian Mission for the Baptist Seminary of Kentucky. Dr. Levens oversees course development and teaching for the department of Christian Mission. She teaches a Foundations of Christian Mission Course, exploring biblical, theological, and historical aspects of mission practice. She also teaches several mission elective courses based on student interest in topics like Social Justice, Global Christianity, Women in Mission, and Biblical Interpretation.

Dr. Levens received her Doctor of Theology from Duke University Divinity school in 2015. For her dissertation, entitled “Leaving Home and Finding Home,” Dr. Levens worked to recover and illuminate Ann Hasseltine Judson’s life work and her writings as one of the earliest American Baptist Foreign Missionaries to Burma in the early 1800s. Plans are currently underway to publish this work as a biography of Ann Judson with the University of Tennessee Press, hopefully by early next year. Dr. Levens has recently published editorial columns for Baptist News Global (baptistnews.com) as well.

Dr. Levens is a native of Louisville, Kentucky, and currently lives in Lexington, KY with her husband and two children. She is ordained through the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and regularly preaches and teaches in Kentucky churches. Before the pandemic (and hopefully after!) she served as the volunteer Children’s Sunday school coordinator for Central Baptist Church in Lexington, KY. B.A. from Baylor University in 2005, MDiv. From Duke Div in 2008.

Judson receives Focus 2 Program sponsored by AAJ

Alumna Sandra Smith Fowler ‘82, M.A., will lead a “Senior Saturday” on March 27th with JC senior students. Focus 2, a career exploration and planning tool recently donated to Judson by AAJ, will assist students as they learn how to conduct a job search, prepare resumes, secure references, write cover letters, and learn interview tips.

This online resource guides users through a reliable, intuitive career decision making model to help them explore occupations, make informed career decisions, and act proactively in their career development. The assessments take less than thirty minutes to complete on any electronic device.

Using five assessments which include Work Interests, Personality, Values, Skills, and Leisure Interests, Focus 2 matches users with careers that they might enjoy based on their results. The recommended occupations are linked to information regarding career preparation, work activities, salary, and where to find jobs. Also listed are professional associations which are important for networking, finding job postings, and improving skills.

“I took this very thorough test at age 50 and the results listed careers I had already done, but also identified other interests,” said Fowler. “If I had known this information sooner, I could have chosen course work and targeted jobs that would have more effectively and efficiently helped me to set and reach professional goals.

The Focus 2 program is not only advantageous for senior students but is also ideal for underclassmen deciding on majors and careers. The license for the program is good for one year and will be available for all students and alumnae.
