The Judson Legacy Project

Always A Judson is committed to preserving and advancing the Judson College legacy in ways that Judson alumnae, faculty, staff, and friends will be proud of, participate in, and support. As an inaugural initiative, Always A Judson is establishing the Judson Legacy Project which will undertake two new ventures:

1. Preservation and archival display of Judson’s treasured artifacts, and

2. Establishment of the Judson Legacy Scholarship Program in support of women’s higher education

  • Always A Judson is committed to the preservation of furnishings, art, artifacts and memorabilia integral to Judson’s history and utilizing those materials to continue to tell the remarkable story of Judson College. When the College began selling its belongings in late 2021, Always A Judson mounted a plan to purchase, transport, and archivally store a collection of treasured pieces as well as the fundraising to support it. Through the generosity of many alumnae and friends, $67,500 was contributed for this purpose. Judson alumna Valerie Pope Burnes, Ph.D., historian, associate professor at the University of West Alabama, and professionally trained archivist, has advised and coordinated all stages of the acquisition and storage process.

Currently, the collection is stored in a climate-controlled space with a digital temperature and humidity recorder that sends real time data to our archivist’s cell phone. If unacceptable fluctuations are noted, a new space will be secured. In addition, pest control services are provided. The materials are placed on metal shelving and the floor is concrete with no exposure to sunlight. Items are covered or otherwise treated so that the nominal use of motion sensor fluorescent lighting will be inconsequential. As it become feasible, Always A Judson will make items available by appointment for research purposes and for displays and exhibitions. AAJ will seek collaborations with the Judson College Alumnae Association, Alumnae Chapters, Baptist Churches, historical and preservation societies, educational institutions and organizations, and museums to organize and sponsor exhibitions across Alabama.

Always A Judson will continue fundraising to safely maintain these Judson treasures, with the goal of working toward a permanent display facility as a tangible reminder of Judson College. Contributions of alumnae expertise and financial gifts will be critical to bringing this venture to fruition.

If you have college memorabilia that you would like to donate to this cause, please contact Valerie Pope Burnes, Ph.D. at AAJarchives@gmail.com

  • As a part of finding new ways to honor Judson’s long and meaningful history of Christian women’s higher education, Always A Judson is committed to the establishment of a Graduate Scholarship Program. It will begin with the establishment of one scholarship, with the intention of adding others in future years. During 2024-2025, Always A Judson will establish the purpose, criteria, promotion, and selection process for the inaugural Judson Legacy Graduate Scholarship.
